The Sagrada Família
A century after Gaudí's death, the tower of Jesus Christ received its cross in 2026 and at 172 metres the basilica became the world's tallest church; the Glory facade continues. Entry from 26 €, 36 € with a tower, online only.
Modernisme
Catalan art nouveau is everywhere: Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia, Casa Vicens, Palau Güell. Seven Gaudí works hold UNESCO listing.
The Eixample grid
Hundreds of identical octagonal blocks with chamfered corners from Ildefons Cerdà's 1859 plan, one of Europe's most photogenic layouts from above. The courtyards are slowly turning into car free green superblocks.
The Rambla and Boqueria
The kilometre long promenade from Plaça de Catalunya to the harbour, and the 1840 Boqueria market of juices, jamón and tapas bars. Also pickpocket ground zero: mind your things.
Castellers
The Catalan tradition of human towers up to ten storeys, UNESCO listed since 2010. In Barcelona you catch them mainly at the La Mercè festival in September.
Camp Nou
FC Barcelona returned to the rebuilt stadium in late 2025 and capacity is climbing toward the target 105,000, Europe's biggest. Tours and the museum run through the works.
Midday vermut
Fer el vermut: the weekend ritual of sweet vermouth with olives and tinned bites in an old bodega, around noon, before lunch. A glass runs 3 to 4 €.
Sardana by the cathedral
The traditional circle dance happens free in front of the cathedral, usually Sunday around noon. No tourist show, more a quiet emblem of Catalan identity.

When to go
The sea is warmest July to October and touches 26 °C in August. August is the worst month in the city though: heat, crowds and half the local places closed. May, June and especially September and October give you a warm sea plus bearable temperatures for Gaudí and the Gothic Quarter. Winter is mild, no beach, but great for the city.

What to taste
Pa amb tomàquet
Bread rubbed with tomato, oil and salt, the base of every Catalan meal. 2 to 4 € as a side.
The Barceloneta bomba
A fried potato ball stuffed with meat under allioli and spicy sauce, invented at La Cova Fumada. 3 to 4 € apiece, ordinary tapas 4 to 8 €.
Calçots
Grilled winter onions dipped in romesco, strictly seasonal from November to April. A menu with meat runs 25 to 35 €.
Crema catalana
The Catalan forerunner of crème brûlée, citrus and cinnamon under caramelised sugar. 4 to 6 € at a restaurant.
Fideuà over paella
Paella is Valencian, not Catalan; the photo menus on the Ramblas usually hide defrosted traps. The local call is noodle fideuà with allioli or rice in Barceloneta at 15 to 22 € a head.
Cava
Catalonia's sparkling wine from Penedès, 3 to 5 € a glass. Works with vermut and dinner alike.

Three trips worth taking
Montserrat
The sawn mountain with its Benedictine monastery and the black madonna, patroness of Catalonia. Train plus rack railway runs about 29 € return, the basilica is free; funiculars climb to the lookouts.
Montjuïc
The castle hill over the harbour: the fortress, the 1992 Olympic ring, the Joan Miró foundation at 15 € and the singing fountains. The cable car costs 19 € return, the funicular rides on an ordinary metro ticket.
Sitges
White lanes, the church on its rock above the beaches and the easiest seaside day out: the R2 train makes it in 40 minutes for a few euros. Carnival and a film festival round it off.
Beaches and the sea
Barceloneta is the most famous and most crowded city beach, with tireless vendors and the highest theft risk: bring nothing precious to the towel and never leave things unwatched, even while swimming. Bogatell and Mar Bella further up the shore stay calmer. The best sand sits a short train ride out: Ocata in 25 minutes, broad Castelldefels and Sitges to the south. City beach sunbeds run 15 to 20 € a day, the street rentals behind Barceloneta far less. The sea peaks around 25 °C in August and early September, and chiringuito beach bars, markup included, come with the territory.
How to get there
Barcelona is one of the cheapest destinations to fly to, with direct routes from Prague and Vienna and competition keeping fares down. Trains and buses run from the airport, the metro covers the city and a car is pure burden. Driving is about 1,800 km, one long day. Ferries from the port reach the Balearics, so a city stay pairs neatly with an island.

Tip
Skip driving into the centre, the ZBE low-emission zone restricts older cars and parking is pricey. Flying plus the metro almost always works out better.
Good to know
- Pickpockets here play Europe's top league: metro, Rambla, Boqueria, beach. Know the moves (carriage door shoves, fake petitions, the spill and clean), keep the bag in front and the phone off the terrace table.
- The tourist tax since April 2026 runs roughly 7 to 12 € per person per night by lodging class, and the city surcharge keeps growing yearly. Budget for it.
- A single ticket costs 2.90 €, the ten ride T-casual 13 €; the airport metro needs its own 5.90 € ticket. The Montjuïc funicular rides on the ordinary fare.
- Buy the Sagrada and Park Güell (18 €) online days to weeks ahead, entries are timed and capped. Expect extreme demand in 2026, the Gaudí centenary.
- The city has seen anti mass tourism protests, symbolic water pistols included. It isn't violence but a signal: keep residential streets quiet and spend at local businesses.
- Lunch runs half one to four (menú del día weekdays only) and dinner from nine; earlier kitchens are mostly tourist ones. In August many family places close for holidays.
- Tap water is safe but chlorinated and hard; locals buy bottled. A car makes no sense for a city stay, zones run 3 to 4 € an hour and garages the same.
