Spotkasz je na każdym kroku

Peperoncino

Chilli is the symbol of all Calabria: bunches dry on house walls, sell at every market and end up in nearly everything. Diamante throws it a whole September festival, eating contest included.

Tropea red onion

A sweet IGP protected onion from the coastal strip around Tropea. Mild enough to eat raw in salads, cooked into jam, and in Tropea even churned into onion ice cream; bunches hang on every corner of the old town.

'Nduja from Spilinga

A fiery spreadable sausage heavy on chilli from Spilinga village below Monte Poro, 20 minutes from Tropea. Every 8 August Spilinga holds its festival; the rest of the year it turns up on bruschetta and in pasta at every trattoria.

Bergamot

The citrus behind perfume and Earl Grey is commercially grown almost nowhere else: the narrow coastal strip near Reggio supplies about 90 % of world production. Shops sell it as liqueur, sweets and cosmetics.

The Riace bronzes

Two Greek bronze warriors from the 5th century BC, found by a diver off Riace in 1972. Among the finest ancient bronzes anywhere, they hold a climate controlled hall in the Reggio museum.

Santa Maria dell'Isola

The little church on a rock spur facing Tropea's clifftop old town, Calabria's most postcarded view. The church is free, the gardens with their panoramic terrace charge 3 €.

Stromboli on the horizon

On clear days the active volcano Stromboli shows from Tropea and Capo Vaticano, sometimes glowing red at night. Full day boat trips from Tropea sail out for the after dark show.

The Sila and Aspromonte

Calabria isn't just sea: the Sila national park holds mountain lakes and a reserve of centuries old giant pines, and the Aspromonte beech forests are UNESCO listed. Mountain air sits an hour from the beaches.

Czego spróbować

'Nduja

The fiery spreadable sausage on bruschetta, in pasta and on pizza. A jar costs 4 to 8 € in shops, a bruschetta 3 to 5 € at a bar.

Fileja alla tropeana

Hand rolled pasta twisted around a rod, classically with 'nduja and Tropea onion. 9 to 13 € in a trattoria.

Tartufo di Pizzo

A ball of hazelnut and chocolate gelato with a molten chocolate heart, dusted in cocoa; Europe's first IGP protected ice cream dessert. Best right on the square in Pizzo, 5 to 7 € at a table.

Swordfish

The emblem of the Strait of Messina, still hunted off Bagnara and Scilla from boats with tall masts and long gangways. A grilled steak runs 15 to 20 €.

Onion jam and goat's cheese

Tropea onion jam with goat's cheese or pecorino is the local starter classic. A 4 to 6 € jar makes a good souvenir.

Cirò wine and liquorice

Calabria's best known wine, from the gaglioppo grape on the Ionian coast, starts at 8 € a bottle. And in Rossano the Amarelli family has made liquorice sweets continuously since 1731, museum included.

Trzy wycieczki warte zachodu

Pizzo

~30 min samochodem

A clifftop town where the tartufo on the main square is compulsory. Add the Aragonese castle where King Murat was shot and the Piedigrotta cave church carved into tuff by the sea; a combined ticket for both costs 8 €.

Scilla and Chianalea

~70 min samochodem

The town of Homer's sea monster Scylla, with the Ruffo castle on its rock and the Chianalea fishing quarter, houses standing feet first in the sea. Wandering is free and the swordfish comes metres from the water.

Reggio Calabria for the bronzes

~90 min samochodem

The archaeological museum with the Riace bronzes charges 10 €, and the seafront above the strait is, per the poet D'Annunzio, Italy's most beautiful kilometre. The A2 motorway there is free.

Plaże i morze

The stretch from Pizzo through Tropea to Capo Vaticano is the Costa degli Dei, the Coast of the Gods: white sand and pebbles, granite rocks and turquoise water. Below Tropea's old town lie Rotonda and Mare Grande, Capo Vaticano hides the Grotticelle and Praia i Focu coves, and photogenic Michelino at Parghelia sits between them, reached down a stair. The Ionian side offers kilometres of wide sandy beaches with a gentle entry and far fewer people. Together with Sicily this is Italy's warmest sea, routinely 26 to 28 °C in August, holding through September. Most beaches are free; a sunbed set runs 20 to 30 €, with peak August Tropea topping 50 €.

Jak tam dotrzeć

Lamezia Terme airport sits 30 minutes from Tropea with seasonal direct flights. Driving is over 1,700 km, so two days on the road. The coastal train works, but beaches outside towns need a car.
