Spotkasz je na każdym kroku
The Pula amphitheatre
The sixth largest surviving Roman amphitheatre and the only one keeping all four corner towers. It held over 20,000 spectators in antiquity and now hosts concerts and Croatia's oldest film festival; entry is 10 €.
Truffles of the Mirna
The woods along the Mirna river rank among Europe's great truffle grounds; in 1999 a dog named Diana sniffed out a 1.31 kg white truffle, then a world record. Everything here comes truffled, pasta through ice cream.
Hilltop towns
Fortified Motovun above the Mirna valley, artists' Grožnjan full of galleries, and Hum, styling itself the world's smallest town. Half a day among them is the compulsory inland drive.
Kažuni
Round drystone field huts, Istria's unofficial symbol. Miniature kažuni appear even on roundabouts, and Vodnjan keeps a whole kažun park.
The boškarin
The Istrian ox with huge long horns, once a draught animal on the edge of extinction, now a protected breed and regional mascot. You meet it in pastures, at festivals and on the menus of better konobas.
Malvazija and teran
The two native grapes: crisp white malvazija and dark, acid edged teran. Wine roads lace the whole peninsula and tastings at the growers belong to any visit.
Rovinj
The peninsula's most photogenic town, Venetian to the bone; the old town on a former islet is crowned by Saint Euphemia's bell tower, modelled on Venice's campanile. Istria was Venetian for centuries and it shows.
Bilingual signs
The Istrian county is officially Croatian and Italian: Pula is also Pola, Rovinj also Rovigno, and Italian schools operate. Bilingualism here is daily life, not a tourist prop.

Kiedy jechać
Season from May to September, the sea warmest around late July. The short drive makes Istria perfect for a long weekend off peak: in June or September you can even park by the beach.

Czego spróbować
Fuži with truffles
Homemade folded pasta squares with tartufata or freshly shaved truffle. 15 to 25 € in the konobas around Motovun, depending on season and shaving.
Istrian pršut
Ham cured on the cold bora wind, never smoked unlike Dalmatia's, aged over a year and EU protected. A starter portion runs 8 to 14 €.
Maneštra
A thick soup of beans, corn and vegetables, often with a piece of pršut. The konoba's cheap and filling staple at 5 to 9 €.
Istarska supa
Not a soup but a ritual: warmed teran with toasted bread, oil, sugar and pepper in a clay bukaleta jug passed around the table. 5 to 8 €.
Vodnjan olive oil
Istria has been named the world's best olive oil region by the Flos Olei guide nine times. Tastings at the producers around Vodnjan and Buje run 10 to 20 €.

Trzy wycieczki warte zachodu
Brijuni national park
~15 min samochodem
Tito's archipelago off Fažana: the summer residence, a safari park of heads of state gifts, over 200 dinosaur footprints and a Roman villa. The official tour with boat, train and guide costs 40 € (kids 15 €); book ahead in season.
Rovinj and Poreč
~40 min samochodem
A morning in Rovinj's maze of Venetian lanes with the 5 € climb up Saint Euphemia's tower, an afternoon with the Byzantine mosaics of Poreč's Euphrasian basilica (UNESCO, 10 €). Back to Rovinj for the evening seafront corso.
Motovun, Livade and Grožnjan
~60 min samochodem
Leave the car below Motovun and walk or shuttle up; the wall circuit costs a couple of euros. Down in Livade sits the Zigante truffle empire, and 20 minutes on, Grožnjan paints and plays.
Plaże i morze
Istria has no sand: expect rock platforms, pebble coves and concrete decks with sea ladders at the hotels, shaded by pines growing to the waterline (Zlatni rt by Rovinj, Medulin, Rabac). Beaches are open and free, you pay only for kit: a two sunbed set with parasol runs about 30 € a day. The wild option is Cape Kamenjak by Premantura with cliff jumping, hidden coves and the Safari bar in a bamboo thicket; driving in costs 15 € a day in season. The northern Adriatic is shallower and 2 to 3 °C cooler than Dalmatia, 24 to 26 °C in summer. Water shoes help against rocks and urchins; the water is clean and many beaches fly the Blue Flag.
Jak tam dotrzeć
Roughly 9 hours by car from Prague (950 km via Vienna and Ljubljana), no ferry needed. Pula airport has a few seasonal routes, but the car wins on both comfort and price. Getting around the peninsula without one is hard.

Warto wiedzieć
- Croatia uses the euro and borders went uncontrolled in 2023. Prague to Pula is roughly 950 km via Vienna, Graz and Ljubljana, 9 to 11 hours of pure driving.
- The Istrian Y did NOT drop its tolls, the free motorway rumours never materialised: the concession runs to 2041 and a new tariff applies since 2025, the Učka tunnel costing about 4.50 €. Add the Austrian vignette and Slovenia's e-vinjeta (16 € weekly).
- On holiday Saturdays expect queues before the Učka tunnel and along the Slovenian coast. The border checks vanished, the jams didn't.
- Rovinj's Valdibora lot by the old town charges 3.50 € an hour in season and fills before ten in summer. Pula is noticeably cheaper; old town cores are car free.
- The sojourn tax runs about 1.60 € per person per night in season, paid on top of the room. Tap water is drinkable across Istria.
- Popular konobas in Motovun, Rovinj and inland need booking in July and August, often days ahead.
