Spotkasz je na każdym kroku
Etna
Europe's highest active volcano, roughly 3,400 m after the 2024 eruptions, visible from Catania and Taormina alike. The smoking summit sits on the horizon most of the time, and central Catania is built from its black lava.
The trinacria
Three bent legs radiating from a Gorgon's head, the ancient Greek symbol of the three cornered island, officially on the Sicilian flag since 2000. You meet it on ceramics, souvenirs and facades absolutely everywhere.
Teste di moro
Ceramic heads of a Moor and a maiden on balconies across the island. Palermo legend has the girl beheading her unfaithful Moorish lover and turning the head into a basil pot; the neighbours liked it so much they ordered ceramic copies.
Caltagirone ceramics
The ceramics town, its tradition dating to Arab times. The Scala di Santa Maria del Monte staircase has 142 steps, each faced with differently painted majolica; for Saint James's feast in late July thousands of oil lamps light it up.
Opera dei pupi
Puppet theatre of knightly marionettes playing out Roland and the paladins, Italy's first entry on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Shows and workshops survive in Palermo, Catania and Syracuse.
Val di Noto baroque
After the 1693 earthquake the island's southeast was rebuilt in unified late baroque; eight towns including Noto, Modica and Ragusa are UNESCO listed. The honey coloured cathedral facades of Noto rank among Sicily's most photographed sights.
Fish markets
Catania's morning pescheria just off Piazza del Duomo is pure theatre: hollering vendors, swordfish, tuna and shellfish. It runs mornings except Sunday; Palermo's Ballarò and Il Capo markets play the same role.
Carretto siciliano
Gaudily painted wooden carts with scenes from the knightly epics, once transport, now a folk symbol. You see them at festivals and in museums, and fashion houses have borrowed their motifs.

Kiedy jechać
Italy's longest season: swimming works from May to late October. July and August can top 35 °C, so June or September is nicer for Etna and the cities. Winters are mild, November often stays above 20 °C.

Czego spróbować
Arancini or arancine
Fried rice balls with ragù, cheese or pistachio for 2.50 to 3.50 €. The gender is a war: Palermo's feminine arancina is round like an orange, Catania's masculine arancino pointed like Etna.
Cannoli
A crisp fried tube filled to order with sheep's ricotta so it never goes soggy. 2.50 to 4 € at a pasticceria.
Granita with brioche
The Sicilian breakfast: an ice slush of almond, lemon or pistachio with a buttery brioche for dunking. 3 to 5 € at the bar.
Pasta alla Norma
Pasta with tomato, fried aubergine and ricotta salata, a Catania classic named after local son Bellini's opera. 9 to 13 € in a trattoria.
Caponata
A sweet and sour starter of aubergine, celery, olives and capers. 6 to 9 €, and slightly different in every trattoria.
Bronte pistachios and Etna wines
The green gold of the lava slopes goes into pesto, gelato and creams. Alongside: full bodied Nero d'Avola, elegant volcanic Etna Rosso and fortified Marsala; a glass runs 4 to 6 €.

Trzy wycieczki warte zachodu
Etna from the south
~60 min samochodem
Drive free to the Rifugio Sapienza car park (1,900 m) and wander the Silvestri craters. Higher up, the cable car costs 50 € return, or 78 € with the 4x4 bus and guide to 2,900 m; book online in season and accept that eruptions can stop the show.
Taormina
~50 min samochodem
The island's most famous day trip town on a terrace above the sea. The ancient theatre with its Etna view charges 14 €; below lies the pebble cove with Isola Bella (4 € to enter the islet). Park straight at the park and ride lots.
Syracuse and Ortigia
~60 min samochodem
The Neapolis archaeological park with its Greek theatre and the Ear of Dionysius cave charges 14 €. Then cross to Ortigia island: a cathedral built into a Greek temple, the Arethusa spring and the market.
Plaże i morze
The east around Catania is lava and rock, with swimming off platforms and ladders; Taormina has pebble coves around Isola Bella. Sand lives in the southeast (San Lorenzo by the Vendicari reserve, family friendly Marina di Ragusa) and in the northwest, where San Vito Lo Capo and Palermo's Mondello play the Caribbean card. The white Scala dei Turchi cliffs reopened in 2025 after years of closure, now with a booked one hour slot for 5 €. A free stretch always runs beside the paid lidos; a sunbed set costs 15 to 30 €, among Italy's cheapest. The sea peaks around 26 °C from mid July into September and stays swimmable to October. By boat, the Egadi islands from Trapani and the Aeolians from Milazzo are worth the ride.
Jak tam dotrzeć
Fly to Catania (east) or Palermo (west), both well served by low cost carriers. Driving means over 2,000 km plus the short Messina strait ferry, realistic only with an overnight stop. On the island plan for a rental, public transport barely exists outside cities.

Wskazówka
Driving from Central Europe means over 2,000 km. Compare total travel time against a flight with a rental car, the difference is usually big.
Warto wiedzieć
- Driving in Palermo and Catania is an assertive sport: indicators optional, scooters everywhere, roundabouts go to the brave. Outside the cities it calms down; rent a small car.
- Historic centres are camera enforced ZTL zones and fines arrive even for accidental entry. In Taormina park straight at the Lumbi or Porta Catania lots.
- Motorways are nearly all free; only the A18 Messina to Catania (about 4 €) and part of the A20 to Palermo charge, Italy's cheapest tolls. Carry coins, not every gate takes cards.
- Blue lines mean paid parking at 1 to 1.50 € an hour (machine ticket or a scratch card from the tobacconist). Leave nothing visible in the car.
- July and August routinely top 35 °C, over 40 °C when the scirocco blows. Do sights in the morning; the roughly 1 pm to 4:30 pm siesta is real, and kitchens reopen around 7:30 pm.
- Watch for pickpockets at the markets and on public transport in Palermo and Catania. Violent crime against tourists is rare.
- In season, book online ahead: the Etna cable car, the Taormina theatre, the Scala dei Turchi slot and your rental car. Summer sells out.
