Spotkasz je na każdym kroku
Diocletian's Palace
The Roman emperor built his retirement palace here around 305 AD, and Split still lives inside it: people dwell, shop and sip coffee within the ancient walls. UNESCO since 1979; Game of Thrones filmed in the cellars.
Klapa
Dalmatia's a cappella part singing about sea, wine and love, UNESCO listed since 2012. In Split you hear it most often in the palace vestibule, whose circular dome makes natural acoustics.
Fjaka
The Dalmatian state of blissful idleness, desiring nothing at all. It explains the dead afternoon lanes and the pace of service; here it is not laziness but a cultural value.
The konoba
The traditional tavern, originally a cellar for wine and tools: stone walls, a few tables, a grill and the peka bell. The best meals hide in side street and inland konobas, not on the promenade.
Welcome rakija
A shot of homemade spirit, herbal travarica, walnut orahovača or honeyed medica, is the traditional welcome. Konobas and apartment hosts often pour it on the house.
Brač white stone
Limestone from the Pučišća quarries has been cut since antiquity: it built Diocletian's Palace and the Šibenik cathedral, and Pučišća still runs its unique stonemasonry school. That it built the White House too is a beloved myth; the original is documented Virginia sandstone.
The bell tower of Saint Domnius
Split's cathedral occupies the mausoleum of Diocletian himself, persecutor of Christians; a bell tower begun in the 13th century crowns the irony. The steep climb gives the best view of palace and harbour.
The white Jadrolinija ships
The state line's blue striped ferries have served practically every inhabited island since 1947. A departing ship trailing gulls is one of Dalmatia's defining images.

Kiedy jechać
Swimming runs June to late September, the sea peaks around 25 °C in August. July and August weekends mean A1 motorway jams and full island ferries. Try a Tuesday departure: both the roads and the prices relax.

Czego spróbować
Peka
Lamb, veal or octopus with potatoes baked for hours under an ember covered bell. Order hours to a day ahead; a portion for two runs 50 to 70 €.
Pašticada with gnocchi
Festive beef larded with bacon, vinegar marinated and stewed for hours in a prune sauce, served with homemade gnocchi. 15 to 22 € in a konoba.
Black risotto
Cuttlefish risotto dyed with its own ink, an intense staple of every konoba at 12 to 18 €. Mind the post lunch photos, it stains teeth.
Pršut and Pag cheese
Dalmatian pršut, bora dried and lightly smoked, with Pag island sheep's cheese, olives and capers. A starter board for two runs 12 to 18 €.
Fish by the kilo
Grilled bream, sea bass or dentex is billed by the kilo, 50 to 70 € at tourist spots; a portion is roughly 300 to 400 grams. Check the price first so the bill doesn't surprise.
Soparnik and local wines

Trzy wycieczki warte zachodu
Brač and Zlatni rat
The Split to Supetar ferry takes 50 minutes (6 € per person, 25 € per car), then cross the island to Bol and the Zlatni rat pebble spit, which reshapes with wind and waves. Detour via stonemasons' Pučišća or up Vidova gora, the highest point of the Adriatic islands.
The Krka waterfalls
~75 min samochodem
The Skradinski buk cascades, boat transfer from Skradin included. High season entry is 40 € (a quarter off after 3 pm), a fraction off season; swimming under the falls has been banned since 2021.
Trogir
~40 min samochodem
A medieval town on an islet, UNESCO listed, with Radovan's portal on the cathedral and the Kamerlengo fortress. Cheapest by Split city bus 37 for 2 €; the town is free to roam, cathedral and tower about 5 €.
Plaże i morze
Dalmatian beaches are pebble or rock, sand a rare exception; that is exactly why the sea is so clear. Water shoes are mandatory kit, pebbles scorch and urchins live by the rocks; pines growing to the waterline give natural shade. Famous Zlatni rat at Bol is a pebble spit whose tip genuinely shifts with the wind. Split's curiosity is sandy Bačvice by the centre, where locals play picigin, the Split slap ball game, in ankle deep water. Beaches are public and free by law, you pay only for kit: a sunbed set runs 15 to 20 € on the city beaches, 20 to 30 € at Zlatni rat. The sea peaks at 25 to 26 °C from mid July to late August, and the water ranks among Europe's cleanest.
Jak tam dotrzeć
Drive to Split in 10 to 11 hours, motorway all the way. Fly to Split or Zadar, with low cost options in season. Ferries to Brač and Hvar leave from Split itself, take the car across only for longer island stays.

Wskazówka
The A1 motorway jams on summer weekends. Leaving on Tuesday or Wednesday saves hours, and money on flights too.
Warto wiedzieć
- Croatia uses the euro and there are no border checks, in the eurozone and Schengen since 2023. Nobody takes kuna anymore.
- The A1 toll from Zagreb to Split is 26.40 €, paid at the gate by card or cash. From Prague budget around 35 to 40 € total in tolls and vignettes through Austria and Slovenia.
- Most main car ferries don't take bookings for a specific sailing: in the July and August rush arrive at the port 1.5 to 2 hours early. Foot passengers have no such problem.
- Parking in Split is scarce and dear, the centre charging 4 € an hour with a two hour cap in season. Leave the car in a garage or at your lodging, you can't drive to the palace quarter anyway.
- The sojourn tax is charged per person per night, 2 € in Split in season, often in cash on arrival. It is not in the room price.
- Mid July to mid August is fullest, and the second July weekend belongs to the Ultra festival: Split sells out. Book far ahead or dodge those dates.
- Tap water is drinkable across Dalmatia. The old coastal highway is beautiful but narrow and slow in season; plan transfers at half motorway speed.
