Vous les croiserez partout
Knossos and the Minoans
A Bronze Age palace tied to the Minotaur myth, excavated and idiosyncratically rebuilt in concrete by Arthur Evans. The bull horns, labrys axe and dolphins of its frescoes stare back from souvenirs all over the island.
The Vouves olive tree
Olive groves blanket much of the island, and at Ano Vouves near Chania stands a tree two to four thousand years old that still bears fruit. Its branches were woven into victors' wreaths for the 2004 Olympics.
Kri-kri
The endemic wild goat and island mascot. In the wild it lives mainly in the Samaria gorge; elsewhere you meet it on labels, souvenirs and road signs.
Free raki after the meal
The grape pomace spirit arrives unbidden after your meal, often with fruit or a small dessert. It is a gesture of hospitality, not a line on the bill; warmed with honey and cinnamon it becomes rakomelo.
Kafenia and komboloi
In the traditional cafés locals sit for hours over Greek coffee, playing tavli and clicking komboloi worry beads. Service keeps the same tempo; you will have to ask for the bill.
Venetian harbours
Chania and Rethymno keep their harbours from Venetian rule, Chania's complete with a lighthouse and an Ottoman mosque on the quay. The evening harbour stroll is mandatory.
A chapel on every hill
Small white chapels top peaks, cliffs and roadsides, where miniature ikonostasia shrines mark accidents. One belongs to every viewpoint on the island.

À goûter
Dakos
A barley rusk with oil, grated tomato, myzithra cheese and oregano, Crete's answer to bruschetta. 5 to 8 € in a taverna.
Kalitsounia
Little pies filled with cheese, or spinach and herbs; the sweet version comes with honey. 4 to 7 € a portion.
Chochlioi boubouristi
Snails fried in olive oil with rosemary and vinegar, a delicacy you rarely find elsewhere in Greece. 7 to 10 €.
Antikristo
Lamb roasted for hours on stakes around an open fire: just salt, meat and time. A speciality of mountain tavernas around Anogia, 12 to 18 € a portion.
Graviera and olive oil
The hard sheep's cheese graviera is eaten fried with honey too, and Cretan extra virgin oil from the koroneiki olive sells at farms for 10 to 15 € a litre.
Malotira
Mountain tea from sideritis grows only high in the Cretan mountains and is dried for a herbal brew. A 3 to 5 € pack makes the best edible souvenir.

Trois excursions qui valent le détour
Knossos and the Heraklion museum
The palace complex 5 km from Heraklion plus the archaeological museum holding the original frescoes and the Phaistos Disc; without the museum the palace is half the experience. Knossos entry is 20 €, book online and go early before the heat and queues.
Samaria gorge
A 16 km descent from the Omalos plateau to the Libyan Sea, the walls closing to 3 metres at the narrowest point. The 5 to 7 hour trek ends at Agia Roumeli, which you can only leave by boat; entry 10 €, boat about 17 €. The easiest logistics is an organised bus trip from Chania.
Balos and Gramvousa
A turquoise lagoon with pinkish sand on the island's northwest tip. The boat from Kissamos calls at the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa, then anchors by the lagoon for 2 to 3 hours; tickets 40 to 45 €. You can drive in on a gravel road, though rental contracts often forbid it.
Plages et mer
The north has long sandy, mostly organised beaches by the resorts (Amoudara, Georgioupoli, Malia), but the meltemi northerly blows there regularly in July and August. The south on the Libyan Sea is wilder (Plakias, Matala, palm lined Preveli): the sea warms earlier, holds longer and stays swimmable from May to early November. The most photographed spots are pink tinged Elafonisi and the Balos lagoon in the west and palm grove Vai on the eastern tip. Plenty of beaches are free and unserviced; on organised ones a sunbed set with parasol runs 8 to 15 € a day, up to 25 € at the big resorts. Beach access is free by law, you pay only for the kit.
Comment y aller
Practically fly only: Heraklion and Chania have seasonal direct routes from Prague and Vienna. The Athens ferry is an experience, but driving from Central Europe makes no sense. Rent a car there, the island stretches over 250 km.
Aéroports

- CHQ · Chania International Airport (Chania)

Distance
1 853 km de Prague à vol d'oiseau. Le calculateur calcule l'itinéraire réel, les péages et le carburant.
Astuce
We compare flights to both Heraklion and Chania from several origin airports at once. Vienna is often much cheaper than Prague.
Bon à savoir
- A car is close to essential: KTEL buses mainly serve the northern axis. On mountain roads expect narrow switchbacks without barriers, and goats around the bend.
- On the northern national road, slower cars ride half on the shoulder so others can overtake. It is a custom, not a rule; the shoulder vanishes at times, overtake only with clear sight.
- Petrol on Crete runs above the Greek average, over 2 € a litre, and another 5 to 10 cents more in the mountains. Fill up on the north coast; smaller stations prefer cash.
- From about 2 pm to 5:30 pm villages keep mesimeri, the midday rest. Outside resorts things close, and making noise then is impolite.
- Tipping means rounding up or leaving 5 to 10 %. Tavernas charge 0.50 to 1.50 € per person for bread; it is standard and listed in the menu, not a scam.
- Tap water is drinkable in the towns, excellent in Chania thanks to White Mountains springs; in Heraklion it is hard and locals mostly drink bottled.
- On 15 August the whole island celebrates the Dormition: festivals everywhere, packed tavernas, sold out ferries and closed offices. Plan around it.
