Kerkyra between two fortresses
The old town squeezed between two Venetian fortresses has been UNESCO listed since 2007 and, alone in Greece, never fell to the Ottomans. The Liston arcade was built by the French after Paris's Rue de Rivoli.
Cricket on the Spianada
A legacy of the 1814 to 1864 British protectorate: local clubs still play cricket on the Spianada, one of Greece's largest squares. You won't see it anywhere else in the country.
Tsitsibira and kumquat
British style ginger beer is brewed nowhere in Greece but here, and the kumquat, the golden orange a British botanist brought in 1924, grows commercially in no other Greek corner. Its bright orange liqueur is protection listed.
The Achilleion
The palace built in 1890 for Empress Sisi, obsessed with Greek myth, later bought by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The sea view gardens hold the famous statues of Achilles dying and Achilles triumphant.
Vlacherna and Mouse Island
The white monastery on an islet joined by a jetty to the Kanoni peninsula, wooded Pontikonisi with its Byzantine chapel behind: the island's most photographed view. Planes landing just overhead are the bonus.
Millions of olive trees
Three to four million olive trees grow on the island; the Venetians once paid a bounty per hundred trees planted. The tall, never pruned crowns give the landscape its silver green cast.
The Durrells
The family of writer Gerald Durrell lived here from 1935 to 1939, and My Family and Other Animals turned Corfu into a literary pilgrimage. The White House at Kalami bay, where brother Lawrence wrote, now serves as a taverna.
Brass bands and flying jugs
Corfu keeps eighteen philharmonic brass bands, Greece's densest network. Easter is the year's peak: on Holy Saturday giant clay jugs of water fly from old town balconies and the bands strike up the Radetzky March.

Pastitsada
The number one Sunday dish: rooster or veal stewed in tomato sauce with the spetseriko spice mix, cinnamon and clove, over thick spaghetti. 10 to 15 € in a taverna.
Sofrito
Veal slices slow braised in white wine, vinegar, garlic and parsley, a direct Venetian inheritance. 10 to 14 €.
Bourdeto and bianco
Corfu's two fish schools: bourdeto in a spicy tomato sauce, bianco cooked white with garlic and lemon. 12 to 18 € depending on the fish.
Tsitsibira
Ginger beer of water, sugar, lemon and ginger, a refreshment no other Greek region serves. 2.50 to 3.50 € a bottle in a taverna.
Kumquat liqueur
The bright orange liqueur of golden oranges often arrives free after a taverna meal; local distilleries sell bottles under 15 €. Kumquat marmalade is the other classic souvenir.
Mandolato
Soft almond and honey nougat, a Venetian Ionian confection. 3 to 5 € a bar at the pastry shops.

Trois excursions qui valent le détour
The old town and Old Fortress
The Venetian fortress on its rocky spur looks over the town and the Albanian coast; add the Liston, the Spianada and Saint Spyridon's church with the island patron's relics. Fortress entry sits around 6 to 10 € after Greece's blanket price rises.
The Achilleion and Kanoni
~20 min en voiture
The gardens of Sisi's palace with the Achilles statues and a half island view cost 7 €; the interior is under restoration, expected open in 2026. On the way back stop at Kanoni for Vlacherna monastery and Mouse Island.
Paleokastritsa and Angelokastro
~35 min en voiture
Coves below the 13th century monastery and wooden boats to the sea caves for about 15 €. A little further, a ten minute climb from Krini village reaches the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro above the cliffs; entry costs 10 € after the 2025 rise.
Plages et mer
The west holds the best sand: broad Glyfada with its beach bars, secluded nudist Myrtiotissa below a monastery, and young crowd favourite Agios Gordios. The north at Sidari is another world, soft sandstone cliffs carving the Canal d'Amour with its swim through love legend. The northeast around Kassiopi and Kalami, Durrell country, means pebble coves with the clearest water and Albania two kilometres off; the south means long shallow sandy beaches for kids, Agios Georgios and the Issos dunes by the Korission lagoon. Paleokastritsa is gorgeous to look at but its water runs noticeably colder. Free stretches sit beside the organised ones everywhere; a sunbed set costs 6 to 20 € by beach, sometimes just a drink order. The sea peaks around 25 °C from mid August to early September.
Comment y aller
Fly direct to Corfu, with seasonal charter and low cost routes. By car via Italy: ferries from Ancona (21 h) or Brindisi (8 h) land right on the island. An overnight cabin turns the crossing into part of the holiday.

Bon à savoir
- Roads are narrow, winding and walled in by olive groves; the west and the Pantokrator climb in switchbacks. Rent a small car, a scooter only if you really ride.
- Green KTEL coaches run from Kerkyra to the resorts (Paleokastritsa 2.80 €), blue city buses cover the surroundings including Kanoni and the Achilleion. Sunday service is thin.
- Smaller shops keep siesta from about 2 to 5 pm and villages wake in the evening. Take the midday quiet seriously as a guest too.
- Tap water is formally drinkable, but hardness and a briny edge push nearly everyone to bottled; a six pack of 1.5 litre bottles runs 2 to 3 € at the supermarket.
- 15 August is the biggest summer feast: full ferries, booked out hotels, processions and closed offices. Plan around it.
- Parking in Kerkyra: private lots by the old town charge about 5 € an hour, the municipal Kato Platia lot a flat 3 € a day. Don't try your luck in the lanes.
- Albania sits in plain view and fast ferries run from Kerkyra to Saranda, a day trip from 40 €. Bring a passport, Albania is outside Schengen; rental cars generally can't cross.
